Understanding Your Profit & Loss Statement

Your Profit & Loss statement summarizes revenue, expenses, and the resulting profit or loss for a selected period.

Start by checking the reporting dates and accounting method. Then review revenue, direct costs where applicable, operating expenses, and net income.

Comparing periods can help you spot changes. Are sales increasing while profit is declining? Have payroll, materials, or other expenses grown faster than revenue? Unusual changes may reflect business activity, timing differences, or transactions that need review.

A Profit & Loss statement is most useful when the underlying bookkeeping is current and accurate. Read it alongside your balance sheet and cash information to understand more than profitability alone.
